Interested in becoming a referee?
Whether youโre a player, parent, or fan of the game, refereeing is a great way to stay involved, build leadership skills, and earn money on weekends. Plymouth Youth Soccer welcomes new and returning referees each season.
Genesis Referee Program (Ages 12โ13)
Our Genesis Referee Program gives younger participants the chance to officiate in-town games with limited training. Each referee receives a kit and a โReferee-in-Trainingโ jersey. Space is limited and new spots open each season.
Once participants turn 14, theyโre encouraged to complete official certification. All referees for Grades 5โ12 must be certified.
To apply, contact the Referee Coordinator and complete the application form.
What to Know
Refereeing is rewarding but challengingโit requires confidence, composure, and good judgment. Plymouth Youth Soccer uses only referees certified through the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and Massachusetts Referee Administration (Mass Ref).
How to Become Certified
- Visit massref.net and create an account.
- Enroll in the New Referee Orientation (online) and Field Session (in-person). Orientation must be completed before the field session.
- Follow the โMy Statusโ tab to track progress and required steps.
- Complete the self-paced online modules through the U.S. Soccer Learning Center (linked from Mass Ref).
- After all coursework, orientation, and field training are complete, take the online certification exam.
- Once passed, your badge will be mailed to you by MYSA.
Annual recertification is required: one mandatory and two elective courses are available through massref.net.
